Yahrzeit Memorial Calendar

Description

This is one of several unique Yahrzeit Calendars in our collection. The Jewish Museum in New York has no example like this; theirs are all stylized, large, one page calendars and memorials, usually for 20 years. Temples and funeral homes, as well as sites on the Internet, also give out the information for that span, but just the dates, not with a picture of the person.
Out of a sense of piety, individuals have created pictorial and written reminders of these dates, such as this example. From the mid-19th up to the mid-20th century, memorial calendars were produced commercially, largely by Jewish printing houses. This one, however, is hand written and very specific to the person. It was originally 2 pages, and then was put into the joined frames. Note the writing in the star around the person’s head – it is the Ashkenazi prayer El Malei Rachamim, said upon the death of a person and at his yahrzeit. The other inscriptions, name and dates, are in both Hebrew and English.
Charles Brown was both a salesman and a politician. As a Republican, he served in the House from 1927-1938; he was able to work with other politicians on public safety legislation. Mr. Brown also was on the Providence School Committee. Active in the Jewish community as well, he worked on many boards to help improved lives. It is wonderful that we have this memorial to him in our Archives.
