It was founded in 1896 by veterans who served in the North and the South during the Civil War in response to the claim that Jews did not bear arms in the defense of their country. Rhode Island Post 23 was incorporated by Jewish War Veterans in 1938. When the Veterans Hospital on Davis Park in Providence was built, the local post paid for a Meditation Room and outfitted it with various Jewish items in 1951. In 2008 the room became non-denominational and the various items, including a bimah covering, candelabra and this plaque, were given to Rabbi Rosenberg by Father Joseph Santos. This is the inscription on the plaque: This Chapel is dedicated to the memory of all men of the Jewish faith who served their country to preserve liberty and human rights.
