Title A name given to the resource David Rome Subject The topic of the resource Military, Medals, Letters Description An account of the resource These military medals all belonged to David Rome, who served in the United States Army during the first World War and served in the European Theatre of Operation France with Kilo Company of the 101st infantry. Mr. Rome was awarded the Purple heart and numerous other citations for his service in the United States Military. Mr. Rome was a member of American Legion Post #58 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. This 1917 list, where you can find David’s name seven rows from the top, shows that he and his company were transported out of Massachusetts to Europe in September of 1917. According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, David was enlisted in the U.S. Army from July 25, 1917, to April 28, 1919. This photo is from when David returned to Fort Devens, Massachusetts from Brest, France in March of 1919 on the U.S.S. America. Doyle Grammar School, also known as the Doyle Avenue Grammar School, was built in 1876. It was designed by E L Angell, a Providence architect who also designed the Candace Street School the next year, as well a school in Woonsocket. Providence born, he then moved to the mid-West. The name of the school comes from both the street and the Mayor, who served in 1864–1869; 1870–1881; and from 1884 until his death in office in 1886. The school was added to between 1882 and 1895, and was torn down in 1967. The site is now the East Side Apartments. Title A name given to the resource Flink Grocery Store Subject The topic of the resource Account Book Description An account of the resource This account book, dated 1898-1900, has entries in both Yiddish (made by Benjamin Flink, the founder) and in English by his son, Abe. The Yiddish entries are in the back of the book, the pages moving right to left, and the English ones are in the front, the pages moving left to right. The Flink family started out in Fall River and moved to Providence in 1899, establishing a bakery supply business at 1224 Chalkstone Avenue, with warehouses located at what is now the Marriott Hotel, as well as in Attleboro, MA. According to records at the RI State Prison, B. Flink and Son Wholesale Flour and Groceries was a wholesale food supplier for the prison between 1915 and 1920. By 1920 it was considered a grocery store. It was a profitable business, with over 250 employees. Finally it went public and was sold in 1979 after Benjamin’s grandson, Ellis, President and Treasurer, retired; he died in 2005. It is interesting to note the prices charged! Title A name given to the resource Foundation Brick from Sons of Zion Subject The topic of the resource Historic Synagogue Description An account of the resource “In 1875 a group of immigrant Jews in the North End of Providence banded together as the Chevrah Bnai Zion (Brotherhood of the Sons of Zion) and applied for a State charter in the name of the Sons of Zion which was granted in the same year. The purpose of the Chevrah was for worshiping God in the Hebraic Faith." From this beginning, with a building on Canal Street (actual address unknown) the group grew until at some point they moved to 98 Charles Street on the corner of Charles and Orms Streets. Nothing is known about this building, either. Finally, in 1888, money was raised to purchase land at 48 Orms Street. A new building was constructed and the Congregation became a focal point of study for both children and adults in the North End. An interesting story about its construction: The city of Providence needed large quantities of sand, for reasons not stated. The congregation had plenty of sand (due to the land they had purchased) and a shortage of money. A mutually agreed upon arrangement allowed the city to take all the sand and also level the land. This meant considerable savings when construction actually began. The architecture, motifs and interior space of the new synagogue were designed after a careful study of several old synagogues. The synagogue opened for services in Elul 1892, with great rejoicing and due ceremony. However by 1961, faced with dwindling membership and declining funding, Sons of Zion merged with another Orthodox congregation, Anshe Kovno. A decade later, Sons of Zion and Anshe Kovno had gone their separate ways and Anshe Kovno merged with the Conservative Congregation Beth David. In 1978, Sons of Zion became part of Congregation Beth-Sholom-Ahavath-Sholom-Sons of Zion. Today, that congregation is Beth Sholom, formerly on Camp Street. “However, in the 70s, with the construction of the Marriott Hotel, the synagogue was demolished. It is hard to research the why, or what I mean is the how, but redevelopments in this area were made to construct I-95. A suit was issued in 1971 by the congregation against the Providence Redevelopment Agency. A sad loss.” This epitaph was written by Chester Smolski of Rhode Island College. Title A name given to the resource Hebrew Free Loan Subject The topic of the resource Hebrew Free Loan Association - Rhode Island Description An account of the resource The Hebrew Free Loan Association was founded on Feb 4, 1903 by a small group of businessmen who saw the need to help the growing number of immigrants who were coming here penniless from Europe. The small initial capital with which the organization was started was contributed by the few in the community who were able to do so. The Association’s name until 1917 was Gemilath Chesed (Deeds of Loving Kindness), and all of its early records were in Yiddish. The size of the loans granted at the beginning ranged from $5 to $25; but as time went on and the community grew, more funds became available, and the organization was able to grant larger loan amounts. Persons requesting loans were required only to provide the names of two satisfactory endorsers. Loans up to $50 are granted with-out any endorsers. There are, of course, no charges made of the borrower. What is so remarkable about our Hebrew Free Loan is its viability –Its fundamental and ongoing usefulness. In every era and whatever the need, the Association has been not only a beacon of hope but has offered practical steps toward self-improvement and security. Despite precise by-laws, only seldom amended, the Association has attracted not only new borrowers but also new donors and new directors, who continually recycle funds. As the world has rapidly evolved, Hebrew Free Loan has remained relatively simple, stable, and inviting. Hebrew Free Loan has remained eager to assist with unforeseen and recurring difficulties, help young people start out on their own, and settle new waves of immigrants. In the latter capacity, the Association has worked fruitfully with Jewish Family Service and the Jewish Federation for three decades. Hebrew Free Loan has prospered, both as an idea and as an actuality, for another important reason. True to Jewish teaching, the Association has never been considered a charity. Title A name given to the resource Jewish Home for the Aged Subject The topic of the resource Mrs. Annie Rabinowitz Description An account of the resource Annie Rabinowitz served on the board of the Ladies Hebrew Union Aid Association in the early 1900s. She was listed as one of the incorporators of the Jewish Home for the Aged on May 27, 1912, along with twelve other women. On July 8, 1914, the committee of the Jewish Home for the Aged presented her with the trophy pictured below for her service. The Ladies Hebrew Union Aid Association was described as, “an organization whose purpose it was to assist all needy Jewish families, supplying them with Food, Coal, Passover Supplies, Rent, Medicine, and to make loans whenever necessary.” To raise the funds needed, the members went from house to house collecting donations. Their service didn’t end with fundraising; they also visited the sick and infirm at homes and hospitals. It was during these visits that it became clear that a Jewish facility was needed for the elderly. With $165 from donations and contributions of household goods, the ladies association rented a cottage at 161 Orms St for $28 per month. It was founded in 1896 by veterans who served in the North and the South during the Civil War in response to the claim that Jews did not bear arms in the defense of their country. Rhode Island Post 23 was incorporated by Jewish War Veterans in 1938. When the Veterans Hospital on Davis Park in Providence was built, the local post paid for a Meditation Room and outfitted it with various Jewish items in 1951. In 2008 the room became non-denominational and the various items, including a bimah covering, candelabra and this plaque, were given to Rabbi Rosenberg by Father Joseph Santos. HOUSE RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY OF THE JEWISH WAR VETERANS, THE OLDEST ACTIVE VETERANS ORGANIZATION IN THE UNITED STATES RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations is hereby pleased and proud to recognize a century of sacrifice and devotion to Rhode Island and the nation by the members of the Jewish War Veterans. From Francis Salvador of South Carolina, the first Jew to fall in the American Revolution, to the devoted war veterans of today, it is only right that all Americans be made aware of the innumerable contributions of Jewish war veterans to the defense and security of the United States in the hope that this knowledge may foster in others the respect and esteem that these patriotic citizens have clearly earned. Title A name given to the resource John Schneider Passage and Exchange Business Record Book Subject The topic of the resource Passage and Exchange Business Description An account of the resource During the immigration boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, various agencies sold steamship tickets to immigrants and their families, arranging for passage to and from America. As transatlantic migration grew, steamship lines relied on steamship agents to fill their ships by selling tickets on commission. Steamship agents had to represent various shipping lines in order to make enough money. They also acted as “immigrant banks”: patrons deposited their money for safekeeping until enough was accumulated for the purchase of a steamship ticket for either themselves or a family member. These unofficial financial institutions also offered loans, money transfers, and money exchanges; the most common was the advancing of money for steamship tickets. Immigrant Bankers were the economic and social gatekeepers of the American dream. They were important in the networks that coordinated the process of immigrant relocation. Many of these agencies catered to specific immigrant communities and the neighborhoods they lived in. Immigrants entrusted their money to steamship agents with the same ethnic background. These agents usually had a good understanding of the English language, which enabled them to provide essential services to newly arriving immigrants. Pictured are pages from a correspondence book, dated 1905-09, belonging to John Schneider. John was born in Russia in the year 1878. He arrived in the United States in 1898 at the age of 20. He owned a Passage and Exchange Business located at 254 Chalkstone Ave. John was an authorized steamship agent for many of the steamship lines including the White Star Line, Red Star Line and Holland-American Line. John Schneider’s letter head shows he not only acted as a steamship agent but also a money broker, real estate and insurance agent, and a notary public.
